Guyana's President Bharrat Jagdeo says the country's security ministry should have "better handled" the detention of about 40 Mormon missionaries ordered to leave the country because their travel documents were out of date.
Mr. Jagdeo said he disagreed with the way the missionaries were briefly detained last week.
However, he said their work permits were expired and immigration rules had to be enforced.
Some government officials have said privately that ruling party officials felt the Mormons, mainly US citizens, were too close to opposition figures.
